Lake Genero 2008

Lake Genero 2008

The Lake Genero gathering was a really nice time this year. Here's some festival recordings with the usual disclaimers, warts and all.
I've noted the fiddle tuning after the tune title where I can remember.
These were recorded in late August 2008, over the Labor Day weekend. I've got more in the hopper and I'll try to get some more posted soon.

What a fun jam we had with Jane Rothfield, Willow and Jim Sirch, Michelle Yu, Ben Stowe, and Johnny Wrench. Buy some of Jane's tunes if you'd like performance quality, eh?
Hard Road to Travel _ADAE
Shuffle About _ADAE
Jim Shanks _AEAE
Mule Team _AEAE   Michelle on the lead fiddle. A Garry Harrison tune?
Jailbreak _AEAE   Jane on the lead fiddle. We were having some fun with Garry Harrison tunes, for sure.

Catching up with the folks who radiate round Christina Crowder's campsite has been a highlight of my festival fun over the past few years.
Old Greasy Coat _AEAE   A gem from Jimmy Triplett as I understand it.
Sweet Marie _AEAE
Learn You How to Rock Andy _AEAE   Here's an example of the fiddle jamming experience. We had a theme going of playing tunes that we didn't know well. This particular recording might not be all that pleasing. That is until we get well into the tune. I stumble around remembering the B part. Folks help out. The whole is greater than any one part. And, we love working out the puzzle.
Double File _AEAE   I learned this from the Fuzzy Mountain String Band recording.
Walk Old Shoe, Heel Come A Draggin' _ADAE
Nancy Dalton _ADAE
Jackarse Eats It On The Way _ADAE   A tune that I learned in Australia, descended from the Irish 'Spanish Ladies'. I recorded Greg O'Leary playing it at Yarra Junction 2006.   American, Cody, has been listening to that version online, and was quite ready to join in at Lake Genero.
Rock on the Mountain _ADAE   AKA Rose on the Mountain.

The wine and cheese jam. Jan and Roy invited some folks for an afternoon get together. We had a good play and a batch of laughs.
Grub Springs _AEAE
Squirrel Heads and Gravy _AEAE   Composed by Chris Germain; read about it on the Fiddler's Companion or the session.org pages.
Pretty Little Gal _AEAE   I learned this last year at Lake Genero.
Creek's All Muddy _AEAE
Greenback Dolly-O _AEAE   This might be played in GDGD more frequently, but AEAE works fine.
Sandy Boys _AEAE
Shenandoah Falls _AEAE   Nice harmonies from George Touchstone. I have a much easier time playing this on a cross tuned fiddle. I can't take any credit on this one, though. I was getting my stuff ready to head over to the hot showers while the wine and cheese crew were finishing up for the afternoon.

A large group playing tunes in the key of G. The guilty parties can be seen on George's webpage here. I played my Flea for a bit, then switched over to fiddle.
North Carolina Breakdown _GDAE   By Fiddlin' Arthur Smith according to Portland 1.
Moon Over the Hill _GDAE
Bound To Have A Little Fun _GDAE   On the topic of associating tunes with events, this tune has a very special place in my heart. Before going to Australia, we'd sold our house and moved to Rochester temporarily to take care of some family business. For my birthday, I called up a local jamstress, asked if we could come to the monthly jam at her house, and asked if we could bring a birthday cake. So amidst a room full of friendly strangers, I called this tune. I didn't know it well at the time, but they all pitched in and we had a fun play, legendary pizza, and a birthday celebration. In that early stage of traveling, the phrase "bound to have a little fun" gave me a bit of a boost over the unknown future. Fast forward 3+ years and here is the same Kathy from Roch playing the same tune, turning the light on a happy memory for me. I believe it was collected by Bruce Greene. If anyone know more history on it, let me know.
Chattanooga _GDAE
Needs a name _GDAE   Who knows it?
Starry Crown _GDAE

Here's some miscellaneous bits. And, stay tuned. I've still got more in the hopper.
Saco River Blues  An original from Mainer Cody McManus.
